If you’re a senior on a tight budget, you’ll want to know: Is Amazon Prime affordable for you?

Good news – there are discounts available that could lower the price. Here are the latest updates on Amazon Prime’s costs, how to get those discounts, and what you need to qualify.

How Much Is Amazon Prime for Seniors?

Unfortunately, there is no official Amazon Prime Senior discount. Amazon Prime for seniors is $14.99 a month or $139 a year (the standard Prime subscription). However, you can get Prime Access for $6.99 monthly if enrolled in a qualified government assistance program such as Medicaid, SNAP, or SSI.

In this guide, I’ll show you how to enroll in Prime Access, its benefits, all the eligible government programs, and how to get discounts even if you don’t have qualified government assistance.

Let’s begin!

What Are The Conditions To Receive The Amazon Prime Senior Discount?

It’s easy: you need to be enrolled in one of the qualified government assistance programs, such as Medicaid.

If you are, you can become an Amazon Prime member for just $6.99 monthly, which is significantly cheaper than the regular price of $14.99.

Here’s a full list of the qualifying government assistance programs from Amazon’s website and what Amazon asks you to submit per program.

  • Medicaid: Upload an image of your Medicaid eligibility letter
  • SNAP: Enter your EBT number and upload an image of the EBT card
  • SSI: Supplemental Security Income (this is different from Social Security and SSDI)
  • Direct Express Prepaid Debit Card: Upload image of card
  • TANF: Temporary Assistance for Needy Families
  • TTANF: Tribal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families
  • NSLP: National School Lunch Program (letter must include your child’s name and the school’s name)
  • LIHEAP: Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program
  • WIC: Women, Infants, and Children program
  • NAP: Puerto Rico’s Nutrition Assistance Program card (Tarjeta de la Familia)

Unfortunately, there is no Amazon Prime Senior discount for seniors on Medicare, Social Security, or if you have the Flex card for seniors.

With Prime Access, you can enjoy Amazon Prime benefits with a discount that depends on enrollment in specific qualifying programs.

It’s worth noting that Prime Access is exactly like a normal Prime subscription, including the same Prime membership benefits, such as free same-day delivery, prime day sales on eligible purchases, free shipping, and other benefits.

Seniors with an EBT card also benefit from the Amazon Prime discount. Avail of this discount by submitting a photo of your EBT card when registering to prove your eligibility.

As mentioned, to benefit from the Prime discount for seniors, you need to be receiving government assistance, and the requirements depend on the program.

If you are eligible, here’s how to join Amazon Prime and get an Amazon senior discount.

There are other ways to save money on Amazon without enrolling in a qualified government assistance program.

You can take advantage of the one-month free trial available to anyone, even those without an EBT or Medicaid card.

You can also use these strategies using Amazon’s helpful money-saving features.

  • Use the Save for Later option in your Amazon account for the items you want to receive price-drop notifications.
  • Use the Subscribe & Save option to schedule items you purchase frequently. It will automatically apply free shipping and a 15% discount.
  • Keep an eye on promotions like Today’s Deals, Deals of the Day, and Lightning Deals.
  • Swap out eligible items you no longer need through the Amazon Trade-In program.
  • Visit Amazon Renewed to purchase inspected and tested used products for a fraction of the cost of brand-new ones.
  • You can become an Amazon product tester. This allows you to test Amazon products for a discount.

  • The Official Amazon Prime’s regular price is $14.99 per month (exc. taxes) or $139.00 per year (exc. taxes).

    1. Hi Patti,

Unfortunately there is no exclusive Prime discount for seniors. You need to be enrolled in one of the approved-by-amazon government assistant programs listed above.

      Hope this helps!

  1. Thank you very much for this information! I already have prime but didn’t know about this discount. I have Medicaid. Is there a way to change my membership cost since I’m already a prime member or would I have to cancel and then re-enroll?
    Thank you,
    Karen D

  2. I have SNAP or an EBT card as of over a month ago.
My Prime membership just renewed and apparently I’m only to be charged $6.99 a month with the SNAP/EBT card.

I was charged $159.00 or so for the year just the other day?!?

How do I get a refund?

Also, using your basic Prime TV Channels I thought were included and if I need to pay for something, I’d be prompted to do so?!?

    Thank you.

  3. It’s unfortunate that Amazon doesn’t help ALL seniors and only those on government assistance.

  4. I agree with the post that commented on Amazon not offering a discount to ALL seniors, not just those who are on government assistance programs already. Also, it would be nice to see our military veterans receive a discount.

    1. I agree. But that’s up to Amazon to decide. I hope they do consider offering a discount to all seniors instead of just those who are on government assistance programs already. That way, everyone can benefit from the discount. Thank you for your input! I really appreciate it.

  5. I am confused. Can I get prime if I don’t have and EBT card or Medicaid. I am on social security. Can I get prime ?

      1. There is no discount on Amazon prime for seniors on just ss. You have to have an ebt card and be on medicaid.

    1. There is no discount on Amazon prime for seniors who do not have an ebt card or on medicaid. However, you can still take advantage of the 30 days free trial and pay full price for a prime account.

  6. I’m 89 which I believe is considered a senior, well I can’t get any one to respond to how I can sign up
Also I thought I was trying the 30 days free which was free delivery, well all the items order I’ve been charged shipping
    WHY?

  7. I also agree all seniors should get prime cheaper. We shouldn’t be penalized because we are not on government assistance. Our medicare goes up every year and prices to live rises everyday.

  8. Shame on Amazon prime for not offering discounts to all Seniors 65+. We are already supplementing those on government assistance programs. How about giving the people who are footing the bills for others a break?

  9. I’m 70, but only on STRS, state teacher’s retirement, not SS. I’m also on Medicare, but not Medicaid. So no Senior Citizen discount for me??

  10. I agree all seniors should get the discount. We should not be penalized because we are not on medicaid we are paying customers on fixed income too.

  11. I think it is totally wrong for Amazon to give discounts to people on government programs seems like Amazon caters to them but seniors that have worked all their lives and paying for those on government programs get nothing. It is a crying shame they do this to our senior citizens.

  12. I totally agree that us senior citizens that have worked all our lives instead of getting the government to support us should be given the same breaks as the ones that have sit on their buts all their lives and waited for their government checks. WE GET NO BREAKS!!! How unfair? I can’t even get any of the senior breaks on my insurance because I have insurance through my employer where I retired from. Again! How unfair. Give us a break.

  13. I am 80 and have had a Prime membership for about two DECADES. My latest renewal is the $150.88 (including taxes). That includes:
    Prime Video
    Prime Music
    Amazon Photos
    Kindle content
ALL OF WHICH, I have NO use for. WHY THE
(delete your favorite expletive from here) can’t I get the $6.99/mo – – – ONLY because I have EARNED my way in our society!

    1. Unfortunately not.

Here are the accepted programs as of today.

      – Medicaid: Upload image of your Medicaid eligibility letter
      – SNAP: Enter your EBT number and upload an image of the EBT card
      – SSI: Supplemental Security Income (this is different from Social Security and SSDI)
      – Direct Express Prepaid Debit Card: Upload image of card
      – TANF: Temporary Assistance for Needy Families
      – TTANF: Tribal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families
      – NSLP: National School Lunch Program, (letter must include your child’s name and the school’s name)
      – LIHEAP: Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program
      – WIC: Women, Infants, and Children program
      – NAP: Puerto Rico’s Nutrition Assistance Program card (Tarjeta de la Familia)

      Hope this helps!
